The design, explained

Pressroom bets everything on the reading experience, because for a writer that IS the product demo. The measure holds at 68 characters, the line height at 1.6, and the hierarchy follows newspaper conventions readers already know how to navigate.

The front page works like a front page: a lead essay given real estate, columns in rails, topic desks for the archive. Visitors always know what to read next, which is the retention mechanic disguised as layout.

Conversion is patient by design. The newsletter ask appears at natural pauses and after essay ends, the moments a reader has just received value, rather than in popovers that interrupt the very experience being sold.
